Travelling Time and Space

Good deed for the day

I cut, sewed, filled [with Finndragon's assistance] and stitched up 15 beanbag balls for my husband's coming juggling class. Yay me :o)

2. attempt

So I spent all morning trying to write up an update for my blog which I've been neglecting horribly during those past weeks. I don't know what happened to that particular browser tab but when I came back from a bathroom/laundry break it was gone and Finndragon had not moved away from the TV completely enthralled by 'Cars" so there's nobody to blame ... maybe the cat ? I don't know but fact is my longwinded first attempt at an entry is gone and much of the desire to rewrite as well :o)

So here's a digest :

- The shot transmission of our Dodge falls - lucky us - under the still existing warranty. How cool is that !

- Master T. is scheduled to return from his deployment sometime this summer and has already asked for cool events in Trimaris in fall for a visit. Wheee !

- I've been receiving more Master-emails for the past two weeks than I have for the past year *G* Upping the spoilage level, anybody ? I'm feeling slightly tipsy from that overdose :o)

- Summer workshops in Castlemere are coming along nicely. While the first one had to be moved to a different location on request of the former hosts due to health issues and we couldn't make it because we'd had a rough night and a case of Finndragon grumpiness everybody had a lot of fun. Second workshop went great as well with loads of people attending and socializing. I taught a shoemaking class and every participant left with a working pattern to make a pointy toe turn shoe. Hubby will be teaching juggling at the next one and I'm contemplating a hands-on on pattens.

- K had us over for some more swimming and grilling and we loved it loads. Finndragon is more of a seadragon than a cave faring one.

- One of my sidekick's is gone for the whole summer. She and her husband are traveling as much of Europe as they possibly can.

- Speaking of Europe, hubby was chosen as one of 12 participants for a Journalist conference in Germany in September. We're now very tempted to look at tickets to turn the whole trip into a surprise visit to my parents. I'm not holding my breath as tickets this time of the year are expensive but it'd be really nice.

- I've been playing alchemist for the better of the last month and this one. I've made shell gold, brewed ink from galls I handplucked at an event site in Trimaris last winter and made medieval style brushes [still trying to get my hand on squirrel fur aka miniver]

- The scribal bug is running strong right now and sewing is more or less on hold. I do have a nice length of lime-green, dark blue and scrumptious red linen on hand and I -know- what I want to make from them but first I've got to get the painting and drawing out of my system. About 2 dozen linedrawings with calligraphy are waiting to be painted and I'm playing with a project that might make it to Summer Art-Sci if all things work out the way I want them to.

- I'm still enjoying my office of the Signet Clerk and am excited about the many new 'faces' appearing on the scribes' mailinglist.

- I've finally taught some calligraphy and am getting the hang of it I think. Maybe sometime soon I'll design an actual class rather than a round-table sort of setting. Thank you to M. who swith her questions and desire to learn calligraphy has been teaching me to teach calligraphy.

- I still feel like I'm doing too much laundry and too many dishes. I swear a lazy neighbour is sneaking in extra dishes into my sink ... meh

- My former sidekick E. was elevated to the Order of the Pelican - woot ! I'm so proud of her :o)

- Finndragon can now count to 5 in Spanish. Thank you., Dora the Explorer !

- Finndragon will be going to pre-school come August. Amazing, eh ? Time does fly but it's going to be so cool to see him grow that next little step :o)

- Summer is here and with it picnics, pools and bar-b-q parties !

The mega project

Like I mentioned earlier I'm dabbling with a couple of things that one day hopefully will make it to Art-Sci. It is pretty unlikely it will be ready for summer Art-Sci this year which is a mere month and a half down the road so I'm more or less aiming for Winter Art-Sci as some sort of self-imposed deadline. [Note: I do work very well on deadlines and chances I get sidetracked by "oh shiny!" moments are less likely - and in case I do end up sidetracked there's still time to finish a certain project afterall *G*] I'm a living history nut: while the end product will be a miniature its creation will include all steps except for the one killing the animal for the skin to make parchment, heh. [Note: Cats, you are safe nevermind my threats and curses ... *G*] I'm already set on the brushes and quills for the project, have oak gall ink cooked up, ground lapislazuli myself and played alchemist for leadwhite. Writing up the documentation for each step is going to be murderous and I'm trying to come up with a way of writing a short and sweet summary for each section before going into greater detail. Right now everything is in journal form, handwritten and with all kinds of doodles in the margins and it looks surprisingly like a witch's cookbook *L*

Gotta love technology *grumble*

In case you sent me an email and I haven't replied to it yet it's because Gmail is giving me a hard time logging into my account and has for the past week *grumblegrumble*

That time of the year

Hurricane season sure stays true to its name and while we don't have a hurricane roaming the seas right now 2007's hurricane season started on time with a Tropical Storm.

'Barry', meet Florida. Florida, meet 'Barry'.

As you can see (and if you know your letters) you can tell that 'Barry' is not the first this year. 'Andrea' beat him and the official start of hurricane season by a few weeks and it really makes you wonder what this year's summer has in store for us. Guess we'll find out.

For now, mornings start with the familiar cone shape over Florida's map and the mysteries of inside pressure and windspeeds. I can't quite imagine what this nature phenomena must have been like for the average 16th century Huguenot or Spaniard. First there is rain, then there is hell tearing your world apart and you never knew what hit you nor did you really see it coming. Without the modern blessings of meteorology you don't see a hurricane coming. You see bad weather on the horizon but a normal thunderstorm is a far cry from the devastating and destructive power of a real hurricane. Heck, even this rain would stink if you had to live in a small wooden hut with a dirt floor and a palm frond roof. If if hadn't been for a hurricane maybe all of Florida would be speaking French instead of Spanish as  second language because for a moment, a brief and fleeting moment, everything appeared to be more in favor for the French Huguenots than the Spanish. Alas, the French hesitated, the hurricane didn't and the rest is history.
