Age of Communication
10.31.05 (11:06 am) [edit]
Not really *snicker* You'd think with all the mail, emails, phones, cellphones and what-have-you-not options people would be able to communicate but no. Yesterday we finally managed to resolve a problem that only became one because there were people who thought that communication is a bother.
*bangs head on desk*
And it took me more than an hour of explanations why communication is important ...
*bangs head on desk*
Anyhow, it's resolved, I have a headcook again and a nifty menue and best of all I don't have to be feastcrat, autocrat and teacher on the same day. Wheeeee :)
Besides, I'm still feeling miserable. My throat is sore and my nose is sniffly and I could sleep for hours BUT today is Halloween and I have to take the Finndragon to the hayride and the trick or treat'ing next door. I even stitched up a little green and yellow dragon costume for him ;) I think I'll grab the green german renaissance dress and call myself the "Green Lady" *L*
Tonight I'll have to finish the drawing for my sister-in-law's wedding webpage and then fiddle with the event booklet a bit more so hubby can take it to the xerox machine. And maybe stitch up a few hoods ... heh

Wow !
10.28.05 (10:29 am) [edit]
It's been a whole week - wow ! I'm surprised how time is flying by these weeks and especially the last two weeks before Scriptorium. It's going tobe one heck of a fun-packed day-event, I tell you.
Look here, the final update is going to happen sometime today or tomorrow I think with a last class description, Reddi Arts advertisement and the feast menue added
http://www.castlemere.org/scriptorium.html" title="http://www.castlemere.org/scriptorium.html" target="_blank"http://www.castlemere.org/scr...
And yes, you heard right. The feast problem is finally resolved. And yeah, you guessed right. He flaked out completely and it's taken care of now. Last night after the Shire meeting the Castlemere Cookies sat down together and finalized the menue I'd quickly drafted when the crummy stomach feeling of premonition didn't want to go away 2 weeks ago. It's all set and done and tomorrow I'll go price scouting. Hallelujah !
Sunday we're getting together for a final staff meeting, friday is set up on site and saturday is doomsday. Join us for the ride ;)
Finn's Halloween dragon costume needs a few final touches, then it's done just in time for the Springfield Trick or Treat fun cmplete with hayride and safe houses for the candy raid. Since I had some green and yellow fabric kicking around I made the babydragon a costume which turned out a bit too large *L* I'll have to take in the sleeves and pantlegs a bit and think of a headcovering [prolly a soft hat or something with ears and a horn attached] and it's done :)
Other than that not much is going on. I cought myself oogling german renaissance garb again and started mucking about with musslin to make hose and a first attempt at gloves *G* Yep, I gave in to temptation and again, it's not the 14th century *giggle* Sorry :)

Jumbled thoughts
10.22.05 (12:36 pm) [edit]
Sooo, I do have a backup menue now and some backup too in case push comes to shove . Heh. It'll all work out, right ? At least we have very very cool classes for our event which just rocks :) I'm very happy about that and the list of youth activities. Our kids even get their own room ! No stashing away the youth in a corner in the feasthall *g*
Grocery shopping today was madness - Wilma isn't due until next week, folks, and I seriusly doubt we'll get to see more than a few clouds in the afternoon. Unless the weather changes drastically ;)
I've gots paper ! I grabbed all my coupons and got two pads of paper for scrolls for the price of one *G* That's when coupons come in handy, really. Next thing on my list is new and more paints including a set of paints we can use for Scriptorium and then for the Castlemere Scribes scribal box.
What's on my to-do-list other than regular household chores ?
Well, hoods for Scriptorium, pre-printed scrolls for practicing at Scriptorium. The Scriptorium event booklet and a few signs for the site. Scrolls and garb, of course, and getting my stuff together to get seriously started on my Art-sci projects. Gnnph ... well, possibly after Master's visit in november and my Mom's stay over Thanksgiving *L* That is, -if- I find the time while doing christmas preparations and shopping ;)

Codex Aureus
10.19.05 (4:58 am) [edit]
Knotwork boggles my mind every time I give it a shot and I can feel my brain tying into the same knots while my eyes are trying to follow the intricate swirly patterns. Not to mention the fact that knotwork comes in incredibly tiny sizes ...
*sigh*
Sooo, I don't know what'd gotten into me but I had to give folio 9 verso and folio 9 recto a shot. You can find them on page 74 and 75 respectively in "Codices Illustres" and while I'm somewhat please with the 'miniature' I'm pretty convinced that my knotwork compares to their knotwork like the crayon scribbles of a 2 y/o to an Old Master. Really. No kidding :)
It still does look good and as soon as the Finndragon is down for a nap today I'll see if I can get the scanner to work with the new computer so you can see for yourself.

Welcome Wilma
10.18.05 (3:54 am) [edit]
There she is, Wilma. What a rare sight to behold ! Yet another tropical depression with a name [never a good thing, really]. The one thing to make her really special though, at least until we know more about her appetite for destruction, is the fact she got the last name of this year's storm list. Good thing hurricane season is almost over :)
Hubby's gone for the week doing a work thing and here I am with precious extra time to do some painting - something I've been neglecting a bit lately caught up between all the events. The preparations for Scriptorium are coming along, some nicely, some with bumps and our class list is not too bad either :) We have classes on history of the scribes, calligraphy, Precendence and Protocol, Shading techniques and gilding, heraldry and medieval scribal supplies, not to mention merchants and all kinds of other activities. We even have a whole track of stuff to do for the kids and they even got their own room, not just a corner in the feasthall :)
For those who are curious

Come on over, take classes and have fun !

Back from Panhandle
10.17.05 (9:26 am) [edit]
Panhandle Skirmishes is over and it's been a good event *S*
Not nearly as big as last year but a lot more relaxed and well, just cozy. I only daytripped because the Finndragon had been sick all week and so it was just me going and I felt somewhat reluctant to leave hubby with a cranky whiny miserable dragon at home. Just as promised I was at the feasthall at 8am sharp *G* Yay me and empty roads between 5am and 8am.
Vistillia has been a great help. She made it possible for me to catch up on all the friday night donations and make a dash for the bathroom every now and then. Thank you so much, girl ! The Silent Auction was amazing. I'm still excited about how many people donated very cool items to the auction and how many stopped by, some on a fairly regular basis as soon as their heart was set on a specific item. There was gorgeous jewellry, commissioned work for which you got gift certificates, garb, gear, coins, armour and weapons too. Thank you everybody who donated something ! We ended the silent auction with a grand total of more than $800 for the hurricane disaster relief :) Isn't that cool or what ?
Feast by Mistress Mairi Ceilidh was delicious and a-plenty, not to mention the yummy stew she'd sitting in the kitchen for a quick lunch on saturday. Thank you for feeding starving scribes and others :)
Oh, and by the by, I'm now proud owner of an SCA crossbow *giggles madly* Now, where to get/how to make bolts ... hehehe ...

Rough weekend
10.09.05 (3:52 pm) [edit]
Finn's sick which is why all of us got little sleep and have been hanging around the house like zombies on vacation all weekend.
Pet peeve
10.06.05 (11:39 am) [edit]
I'm not sure if it's a german thing or not but I hate unprofessional behaviour. Even at something that's a hobby.
This half-assed laissez-faire attitude some display so happily when volunteering to organize something is driving me absolutely up the walls. If you volunteer to do a job, do it, and please for all our sanity's sake, do it well. If you want to vanish from the face of earth, if you don't care about replying to emails in a timely fashion, if you were voluntold and are too chickenshit to say 'no', do everything but volunteer to help 'cause you aren't helping. You're making things bad, maybe even worse for people like me who like a modicum of organization and professionalism.
'n you know why ? It's because it actually helps reduce the stresslevel and ups the level of fun you'll experience. It removes those nasty little pitfalls of last-minute-panic and chaos.
Give it a shot, once, when you have the time.

Possible A&S entries ?
10.01.05 (5:16 pm) [edit]
So there are two projects that I'm working on that actually have documentation notes or rather are in the documentation stage of the process and if I do find the time to actually make progress on both of them they might end up pretty decent entries for spring art-sci.
Viking beads
I'm getting pretty good at making itsybitsy teenweeny beads with simple decorations and I'm just about getting ready to get 25 pounds of clay to build a furnace *grins* How insane is that ?
A book
I have Aventiure's founding history all written up in german and I always planned making a little book of it. Well, there's some vellum here and what better to use it for than making a book ? Taking calligraphy and illumination back to where they originally belong : a book, not single folios :) I've already decided on a style and half my documentation is already done with the rest on all kinds of little notes and scribbles and bookmarks. Now I need to find a cool book that explains how to sew quires into a book with wooden boards. I've already braved asking a kingdom goddess of bookbinding and she offered to help :) Yay !
Good thing I have so many excuses to not work on either of those two projects right now *L*
