You Are The Champion
"Don't worry, I got it."
You play as the Hero. You are the one who usually tries to take on the world for any cause you believe in. You are a natural leader in most circles and are not afraid to take that position if a situation calls for it. Others look to you for inspiration and praise you for your acheivements. Even though they love and adore you, however, you are left feeling alone or overwhelmed many times. You're almost always positive and keep your chin up despite any setbacks because you know that you will succeed in the end, no matter how long it takes.

The following came from an anonymous Mother in Austin, Texas..
"Things I've Learned from My Boys" (honest and not kidding):
1.) A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.
2.) If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.
3.) A 3-year old boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.
4.) If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.
5.) You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.
6.) The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.
7.) When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh", it's already too late.
8.) Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke -- lots of it.
9.) A six-year old boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old man says they can only do it in the movies.
10.) Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old boy.
11.) Play dough and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.
12.) Super glue is forever.
13.) No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.
14.) Pool filters do not like Jell-O.
15.) VCR's do not eject "PB & J" sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do.
16.) Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.
17.) Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.
18.) You probably DO NOT want to know what that odor is.
19.) Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like ovens.
20.) The fire department in Austin, TX has a 5-minute response time.
21.) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.
22.) The spin cycle on the washing machine will, however, make cats dizzy.
23.) Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.
24.) 80% of men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid.
25.) 80% of women will pass this on to almost all of their friends, with or without kids.
a) For those with no children - this is totally hysterical.
b) For those who already have children past this age, this is hilarious.
c) For those who have children this age, this is not funny.
d) For those who have children nearing this age, this is a warning.
e) For those who have not yet had children, this is birth control.

... came the rain.
In time for the official begin of the rainy season in Trimaris I woke up to the gentle pitter-patter sound of rain on the world around us. The sky is a solid boring midgrey and while it is not raining heavilly it is raining consistently. Perfect book'n tea weather :)
That is while your toddler is asleep. The rest of the day you're entertaining a rambunctious inquisitive and funnily babbling toddler indoors - wheeee, fun ! Good thing we can make use of the porch even while it is raining and get some fresh air. Energetic toddlers don't take well to being cooped up inside the house all day.
Especially after an exciting outdoor camping weekend ;)

Lessons learned :o)
05.30.05 (6:36 am) [edit]
It's monday morning, Memorial Day, and my men are both still asleep. Me ? Well, my inner clock is set and no matter what and where I will wake up at 7:30am and so once in a while I get to enjoy a little me-time in the mornings hapily aware of my beloved little family snoozing in the next rooms. Oh, and nothing beats having a cup of tea you don't have to keep on the shelf - out of reach of a certain little babydragon.
Our trip to TMT, Trimaris's Coronation & Crown Tourney [no kidding, big change in the kingdom calendar because of lack of events during summer, long story], was a lot of fun and that even despite me going through some nasty arguement between some orange juice I'd had earlier and my upset stomach :/ BUT camping with Finn is definitely an option. After the cabin-desaster at Panhandle last year, staying in a tent this year worked pretty much like a breeze. While going to bed took a little longer and bedtime got pushed back a full 3h staying in bed and sleeping through the night filled with the sounds of singing and drumming were no problem at all :) Hurray !
What I learned this weekend :
- There's good heat and there is bad heat. This weekend we had the bad kind of heat. It was hot, hot, hot, omigod hot and even in the shade with plenty of water only the occasional lukewarm breeze from the lake dawdling up the slope managed to give you a little break in this misery. We drank LOTS and LOTS of water and got away with only the slightest tinge of sunburn red on arms and cheeks [me] and shoulders [Finn] but others weren't as lucky. I know two left the event early and in an ambulance :( Heat- and sunstrokes are no fun at all.
- Fighter's "food" is great for you to keep you hydrated ! Whatever the diet for a fighter during a tourney, go for it even if all you're doing is sit in the shade and watch. Drink water, water, water [and if you like Gatorade or some applejuice mixed with water], eat salty snacks like nuts and pickles, even give pickle juice [no kidding] a shot and eat light. It really helps keeping you alive.
- End of may, beginning of june actually marks the time when you'll start to fall back on fans and a/cs to get through the day. It was so hot. However, heading to some of the buildings with aircondition was a bad mistake. Their coolness and dry air made you dread going outside again *L*
- A Marquee tent is - looking at my experience with round pavilions and getelds - the most difficult to set up tent.
- Portable holes are your friend ! Bring many friends :) one for each pole !
- A 10x10 Marquee tent provides ample space for 2 adults and a toddler. I was actually impressed by how much space we had left after setting up our bed [airmattress on one of those collapsable frames] and the babydragon's crib. Absolutely awesome !
- When choosing a spot for your Marquee tent shy away from sandy grounds. Really *G* Since you have to have guylines to hold up the tent you need a good ground for your stakes to stick. Soft sandy ground is nice to walk on but makes finding a good grip for your stakes a real pain :)
- A Marquee tent needs way too many guylines. However, it works as some kind of security system : sneaking up on a guylined marquee at night is pretty dangerous with all the tripping traps formed by the ropes ;)
- When sewing a marquee make sure all roof and wall pieces are exactly the same size ... heh. Even if you measured, measure again, heh *L* Our marquee was pretty crooked and lopside because it appears that some of the roof triangles turned out to be somewhat different in size [they did line up on the floor though !] which was why the solid blue parts of the walls didn't line up properly with the solid blue parts of the roof. Means, I'll take it apart again over the summer and measure and line up properly again :)
- I like our tent, it's cute-looking with its blue-white-striped circustent looks and I'm just blown away by its spacious interior.
- A tent needs windows. During the day the marquee turned into a nice mixed-gender sauna without an oven and a cool dipping pool [even the lake was only lukewarm]
- We need a bigger set up for cooking if we want to cook for more than two people. The firebasket is nice but way too small for efficient cooking.
- Bring firewood. The firewood on site was not really all that good.
- Get some kind of shelf for stuff. Rubbermaid bins are nice for packing and stacking and covered up not much of an eyesore [plus they double as chairs] but they are a pain if you need stuff from the box on a regular basis. After a while you have to rummage through te entire box to find stuff.
- Make some really really lightweight garb for summer. Even I, the authenticity nut, couldn't be arsed to wear more than a short-sleeved drawstring blouse, underwear and an anklelength aprondress with jewelry. The german renaissance dress stayed packed in the garb box for the entire event - it was just too hot. Guess I'll go with the overall fashion of whipping up some roman or greek garb for my family in the end :) Tim definitely needs some shortsleeved stuff, Finn seemed okay with lightweight linen tunics and a diaper :)
- Foodwise, the bar-b-q on saturday night and the carrot-stew for lunch on sunday were great, as was the breakfast even though we didn't have eggs for scrambled eggs and waffles. Next time I'd probably bring some sandwhich making stuff along because at times just a neat little sandwhich with some meat and pickles sounded like a great idea. Having the fruits and salted pistaccios to pick from all day was really a great idea.
- The number of people that know my name and what I do is disproportional to the number of events I go. It's scary, really !
- Even though I didn't seriously participate in the scribal contest I came in 5th and was mentioned in court. Go figure :)
- I absolutely loved hearing that Castlemere Scriptorium's work has improved in quality and that people watch our little scribal group with a somewhat envious eye : fieldtrips, potlucks and bar-b-qs :)
Guys and gals, it's not that hard ! You can do it :) Get together and have fun, all you have to do is meet on a regular basis :)
- If your fairy godmother asks you if you want to meet some of her friends, run to change from your cheap little underdress [it was late at night, I was headed for bed, really !] into something formal. Turned out her friends were pretty much all high mucketymucks *L* and I was feeling somewhat underdressed, heh. It was fun anyhow and I wish I'd had a bit more time. However, I had babywatching duty :)
Speaking of, I can hear Finn talk to the mouse and the bear in his crib so I guess any additions to this list will have to wait until later !

Done, done, done !
All that's left to do is to bring everything downstairs to play the good old "Tetris" game packing the car with all the things that make events fun and some housecleaning, mainly because I don't want to have to deal with that first thing after coming back home. Cleaning and packing all the SCA stuff away after an event is enough of a chore, no need to add more to that if you can help it :)
We'll be setting our crooked lopsided marquee tent up tonight for the first time - pray for us ! *L* We might need it ;)
Until then I'll get some housecleaning done and the Mid of Lorraine scroll scanned. While I do not like where I put the title I think the illumination turned out fine. I'm pretty happy with my shading and the detailwork despite the fact that this was a quick scroll at the last minute because I didn't know until the very last moment whether I'd have to include the sheetmusic or not. Well, the sheetmusic didn't get here in time so the design had to be changed at the very last minute.
It still looks good though :)

Tent II
05.25.05 (6:08 am) [edit]
The walls and valance are now attached to the roof-section and now it's on to sewing the loops for the door-toggles and the stakes.
I need to get some netting to attach too so we can at least try to keep the bloodsucking winged monsterscommonly referred to as "mosquitos" out of the tent at night. They attacked us yesterday while we were having dinner on the porch and my left arm alone sports 5 new bites *grumble* Sooo something's gotta be done about that.
Tomorrow Tims going to get the wood for the poles - looks like we're going to have a medieval tent for TMT this year *G* It looks like a little circus tent, all cute and blue and striped though since we bought different fabrics [blue canvas and blue-white striped outdoor canvas] *L* Oh, and since I have some leftover blue canvas and some pre-cut valance I thought I'd give it a shot and make a tiny little sun/rainfly to attach to the front :)
More to come later T

What is it about TMT, Trimaris's Coronation [this time with crown tourney together] event, and tents ? Last year I was sewing away on the stupid marquee and this year, same time, same place, same reason, Im sewing away on the stupid marquee again this time hopefully finishing it for good.
So far things are looking good. I need to finish the flatfell seams that attach valance and walls to the roof part and then add the loops for toggling the removable part of the doors, the door closure and the stakes, punch in the grommets for the cornerpoles and then - after cutting the poles to size - we need to set it up to see if it works at all. *G* I'm sure it's going to be a bit lopsided since for some odd reason the sides did not line up properly despite my best attempt at measuring properly. Very very odd.
Lats week, by the by, I had another freak accident with Finn who trying to dress me into one of his shirts poked his fingers into my eye and caused a corneal abrasion that had me pretty much blinded for a good day. It's slowly recovering with the help of two different kinds of eyedrops but my vision on my right eye is still somewhat fuzzier than I'm used to. Guess I'll finally need some kind of glasses on a regular basis. Meh :o/
More later :) It's back to sewing the tent !

Far from it ...
While others manage to rescue all kinds of critters I get to bury the mutilated corpses of lizards marking the trail of death leading from the porch into the house.
'Boots', our sluggish and somewhat belly-heavy mothercat, has finally revived the killer instincts of a former streetcat and begun to take it out on the poor lizards that make their way unto our porch. She has that odd little mewl set aside for her 'war cry' and its usually a dead give away that she's caught yet another emerald green gecko or brownish-blackish lizard. Today I caught her twice in the act.
The first time she yowled her little war yowl and crouched near the porch swatting somewhat bored at what I first thought was a leaf. The 'leaf' had already lost half its tail and decided upon Blobster's arrival to quit moving hoping that playing dead might help keep the second cat at bay.
Well, luckily Blobster isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer and he's lazy on top of that so why bother slaying something that looks 'odd' and moves when all you have to do to get fed is do circle-eights around your female can-opener's feet ? And he didnt care about that 'thing' his mother obviously thought of as 'entertaining'.
I scooped the little guy up and brought him downstairs to hide in the yasmin bushes. Hopefully he learned his lesson and doesn't die of a heart attack.
Find no.2 was gruesome. Almost worthy of police tape and some chalklines on the hardwood floors. There's just something really disgusting about halfeaten lizards with their intestines ... err, nevermind. It's dead.
To spare us the sight of more slayings I took the Finndragon over to Kid's Campus, a neat playground with a waterpark and let him get all soggy and sandy playing with the fountains and diving into the sandbox. It's a lot of fun to watch him be the playground busy bee filling his little plastic bucket with water, watering the plants, then using the shovel to drink some of that water before trading water for sand :) Next time I'll take the camera - promised !

End of the Year
05.17.05 (3:20 pm) [edit]
Well, at least for my MOPS group so we had a party today instead of a regular meeting :) It was lots of fun and I got to take a soggy, sand-coated but happy and tired Finndragon back home after splashing around in kiddie pools, shoveling sand and using all kinds of four- or three-wheeled vehicles. Not to mention the juice and pizza orgy part of the party. I just wish I'd brought the camera but I spaced it completely and only remembered it when we pulled into Michal's driveway.
Anyhow, we're now officially on summerbreak and that means no more tuesday MOPS meetings until september. It'll give me somewhat more air to breath before getting ready for A&S Nights but both, Finn and I enjoy it so I guess we're looking forward to september.
Tonight is, as usual, A&S Night at my place. We'll be stringing a few necklaces to spiffen up our norse dresses, Martine is going to bring paint samples and I might continue sewing the codpiece for Tim's Landsknecht outfit *L* What a freaky thing ;)
Pictures to follow :)

tax pennies
05.16.05 (7:18 am) [edit]
The weekend is over and I'm still not a single penny smarter concerning the "laurel tax" than before. I hope a certain wicked Master is going to solve that mystery soon or else this apprentice is going to explode with curiosity ;)
I know I've been taxed by some laurels lately but that's a totally different story. I just suck at staying under the radar, it seems.
The Roman Orgy was a lot of fun with a lot of people and a lot of food. Here's the menue for those interested in roman cooking :
starters :
- ricotta cheese with fresh crushed herbs spiced with honey and pepper and garum
- flatbread
- hardboiled eggs
main course :
- fried courgettes with garlic and vinegar
- carrots with caraway seeds
- asparagus with garlic and vinegar
- meatballs with pinenuts and a honey-wine glaze
- cooked ham with apricots
dessert :
- dates filled with almonds and honeysauce
- nut tart
We had a big table set up on our porch and everybody dressed in makeshift togas for the occasion. I'm really curious about the pictures ;)

Roman Orgy
05.14.05 (7:06 am) [edit]
Today sees our first Castlemere Cookies Medieval Dinner Club cookout. We are having a Roman Orgy :) and I'm sure it's going to be fun. The recipes sound all good and albeit a bit exotic for modern ideas quite tasty so I don't think we'll scare anybody away with cooking that's just too experimental *L*
More about it tomorrow ! Have a great weekend :)

Look, it's a dress !
05.13.05 (9:34 am) [edit]
Two dresses, to be exact :)

Lots and lots and lots of skirt pinned to the hem of the bodice with a needle that hs a little pearl as a head so I could walk without falling over my own feet. I love how the fabric of the dress drapes. From this angle the bulgecap with veil doesn't look too funky either and actually a lot of people liked it :) I'm very happy with this dress.

During court. I just received my Argent Estoile for calligraphy and illumination. I'm hoping for a better picture of my purple Cranach dress but it doesn't look bad even from a distance [or maybe because of the distance *g*]. I still need to make a proper hat for that outfit, in that picture I'm wearing a cute little white linen coif.

And the plotting begins ...
05.13.05 (9:14 am) [edit]
It's 3 months until Trimaris's 20th Year Anniersary Celebration and 5 months until fall Art-Sci so let the plotting and planning begin.
I still need to get used to the idea that the summer in Trimaris is the time of the year where you hole up at home to work on all kinds of projects. In Drachenwald it was the wintermonths when you started to prepare for the coming eventseason and somehow I haven't managed to reset my inner SCA clock yet. Just when I start being all excited about events and camping - BLAM! - Trimarian Summer hits and all quiets down under the neverending hum of the airconditioning. Last year it was really bad, this year I think I've managed to set aside enough projects to guarantee a busy summer :)
There're a few things I want to spiffen up our encampment, there's new garb due for husband and the babydragon and of course for me too :) Somebody once said "You know it means two new dresses for the seamstress if she's making one for her husband". Well, I think that's about right looking at my plans *L*
For fall Art-Sci I'm hoping to suck in enough Castlemerians to have a chance on winning the "Patron of the Arts & Sciences". Way in the past Castlemere won it once or twice but has been slacking the last couple of years and with all I've learned I'd love to help more people get the recognition they deserve. We have some really cool artisans in our local group and I think they deserve a bit of limelight :)

Flitter-Flutter-Banner
05.12.05 (9:16 am) [edit]
Last night I finished up my new banner - hurray ! It's heavy purple satin with satin bees appliqued to it. The "chief urdy ermine" is made from white satin with the ermine spots painted on it and it's appliqued to the purple satin as well. The backing is plain purple cotton - after all the work I just didn't quite feel up to creating another banner just like it to have a matching backside *G*
I added little tabs and used one of my old and simple curtain rods to hang it from :) It looks mighty spiffy.

The new Jaguar is way too scrumptious for its own good. Im somehwat torn between wishing they'd make the commercial longer or stop showing those droolworthy pictures on TV completely ...
A Survivor's Report
05.09.05 (5:32 am) [edit]
Tired but happy after Art-Sci and before going to bed for much needed sleep here's a quick report
- scored 41 out of 45 for my entry [the 15th century german scroll]
- received an Extraordinary Merit
- was asked permission tp publish my documentation on the Trimaris web page
- received Popular Acclaim for the scroll in Court
- was awarded a Companion of the Order of the Estoile Argent for Illumination & Calligraphy
- had a good dozen people attend my beginner's class on illumination
and had a damn good time at an OMIGOD event and feast :)
More later after my brain boots itself again.

Done !
05.05.05 (11:45 am) [edit]
It's done, it's done. My first Arts & Sciences Competition entry along with a killer documentation is done :) Hubby is going to give it a last "all-over" to make sure I didn't fall into my funky "let's apply german grammar to the english language" quirk and check for the last spelling mistakes and then it's totally done and ready to be printed and stuck into neat little folders.
Last minute stuff
05.04.05 (4:13 pm) [edit]
As usual before an event, there is last minute stuff to do :) I have sworn though not to indulge in any last-minute-sewing late-night-shifts so the sewing table is all cleaned up and every sewing notion is packed away properly.
Now it's only about getting the documentation completed and printed as well as the class hand-out and then it's packing time ! I need to add the finalized bibliography to my documentation and I just got pictures of the process which I'd like to add. The class hand-out will need some final editing but I've taught it before so it should be a fairly quick endeavor.

Muhaha !

The purple dress is done ! Yay me *G* Pictures to follow soon :)
Now on to the "bling" for the dress. Maybe I can get some little bits done before I run out of time ... heh *L*

Seriously
05.03.05 (5:19 am) [edit]
My timing sucks. Big time.
I'm leaving for Art-Sci friday and while my actual entry is done and the documentation needs three more appendices and a truckload of copies it is pretty much done but still, I need to finish the sleeves for the purple dress and hem the edges of my new banner, finish painting my tablecloth -if- I want to bring it and, and, and ... Oh, and did I mention I'm going to teach a class too ?
Well, like I said I'm trying to be relaxed about it : What doesn't get done, doesn't get done so I guess that's a good thing.
The really important stuff are the documentation, the class preparation and the dress's sleeves :) I can do that.

So what else is new
05.02.05 (7:47 am) [edit]
*sigh* After a moment of hope it's back to the same old routine of negativity from that person again. Two of her emails had me steaming this morning again - what a way to start the week.
Well, it was nice while it lasted. She is now on my blocked sender list. I've just had enough.

Gone for a week
05.01.05 (7:29 am) [edit]
Heh :) My Master is gone for the week and I'm here being a good apprentice working on my documentation, trying to find a compromise between "sweet and short" and "tome".
Guess hubby will have to do the editing *G*
