Travelling Time and Space

Guess what ?

I'm back ! *G*

It's been quite a while since my last entry and trust me I've had a rollercoaster ride kind of time during my absence which definitely didn't leave me with any kind of time to go -blogging in the evenings.

Having my parents over for two weeks was awesome. We did lot of fun things together but the main attraction - of course - was Finn. They had a blast meeting him again after a solid 6 months and greatly enjoyed his attention and goofy habits. They taught him how to wave good-bye and how to play "Wie das Faehnchen auf dem Turme ..." and he hasn't stopped waving his little chubby hands since then *L* The tips to the Zoo and to the beach certainly were the highlights : Finn is quite the beachcrab even though he doesn't quite get why the water is always running away from him *g* and he eyed all the animals t the zoo with a "What kind of duck are you ?" kind of expression which drove all adults into fits of laughter. We have ducks and their fluffy flocks of chicks stopping by on our porch several times every day so he knows 'animals' but seeing different 'big' birds, agoutis and monkeys was just a new experience and he seemed to have an exciting time. We even took him into the aviary with the Lorikeets and while feeding the little parrots Finn gently tried to touch them and as gently they picked his sticky fingers aside. It was awesome how 'respectful' the not quite year old rascal and the brightly colored australian birds treated eachother.

We did lots of stuff [Jax downtown, historic parts, Landing, St Augustine, the Outlet Malls, general shopping, beach, just hanging out by the pool, etc] while the weather was hot hot hot and humid, we had our parents meet which turned into a great weekend with lots of sign-language and germ-ish babbling and Finn's baptism was performed by my favorite Father David so all went well and was good.

Not like we had any time for maintining a decent house, doing laundry or any other housekeeping stuff *L* Ehh ... got LOT of catching up to do while getting ready for my driver's license test and doing more scrolls for kingdom and the PS Black and blue event nd getting redy to teach my illumination 101 class.
Oh, and I volunteered to deputy to our group's MoAS. Kenet and I will get together at the next Shire meeting and just talk about all of it :D

Oh, and I'm in for a a little surgery at my OB-Gyn sometime soon ... bleah :? Hopefully that'll be the end of the whole procedure. Wish me luck *S*

And chaos shall rule !

So right now we're busy cleaning up the apartment to get it into a presentable state for my parents's visit strting wednesday [and yes, it includes redecorating *g*], buying a new car since finally all insurance company related issues are resolved and discussing a probable transfer from our apartment to another due to some neighbour-related problems.

Guess that explains why I haven't posted anything lately, eh ? *g*

Anyhow, the car-problem is resolved : we bought a 1 y/o Dodge Neon still with factory guarantee and impressingly low mileage - basically a new car. Finn's mega carseat fits onto the backseat along with two smaller passengers and it's still sporty looking so it appeals to Tim's love for less family-van looking cars  Probably the best deal we could have made.

Wednesday we'll know more about the apartmentsituation. Of course that's the day when we're driving to Orlando to pick up my parents too who haven't seen us in 7 months. It's going to be loads of fun *g*

And we're doing the office-run to get me a Florida driver's license - wheeeee *L*

6 more days and what's left of today

Starting next wednesday my posts here will be rare : my parents are doing the big hop across the pond to come visit us for two weeks - wheeee !

I'm very much looking forward to seeing them again, especially since they haven't seen us since december last year and I can't wait to see their faces when they see Finn ! He's grown so much and is such a goof

Anyway, it's going to be fun despite the fact that my mother is the housekeeper of housekeepers and I need to clean the apartment properly during the last few days before their arrival *g*
And then there's the scribal tea on sunday which means I need to get the handout finished and the scrolls inked and ...

WAAAAAAAHHHH ! *L*

Right now though I'll call it a night and bugger off to bed - Tata !

At least the pictures are somewhat nice

What Mythological Creature Are You (Many Results and Beautiful Pics)
brought to you by Quizilla

Actually, I think pretty much all of those quizzes are stupid but I can't come up with something to talk about tonight and they make for good fillers *g*

Finn and I were at the library today and picked up a couple of books, so I guess I'll have something to talk about later this week  Then too, there's the scribal tea on sunday and my parents are coming here for a 2-weeks vacation next week so lots of stuff is coming up soon.

For now though it's "Good night" and "au revoir" !

So - what is this all about ?

There's a rather wild discussion going on on the medieval encampment list at the moment.

Topic : Medieval or Medievaloid ?

It's as usual about the biggest strength and the biggest weakness of the SCA, namely the low entry and for some the all-over level of historical accuracy.

Now in my mind this is great when you're getting started. It allows you to get into the grove really fast, you meet people and learn about new things and you can grow into those new shoes. However, I think or rather I feel that this all should/will/does encourage one to grow for sure and while learning you should start improving your knowledge and skills and dress and general stuff based on your ability and time and - unfortunately - purse.

If after 20 years you're still wearing polycotton kind-of peri-oid garb ... well, then there's something 'wrong' with it. Is that relly your best attempt at pre-16th dress ? I'm sure - with that amount of experience - you can do better than that.

Why are some people so easilly satisfied with a half-assed attempt at something ? Is it the booze ? The chance of getting laid by some open-corsett wench or cod-pieced rogue ?

Awwww, c'mon ...

Anyhow, rambling off, light off - off to bed

Short and sweet

Happy 4th of July to all you US-souls out there :D

For lil' european me - I must shamefully admit - the picnic and fireworks part of this national holiday is the fun part of this event. That and that hubby gets another dy off from work nd we get to spend a loooong weekend together !

Last night I pencilled in the designs for the illumination class. I'm going to provide scroll-blanks with a border and a tiny miniature in 13th century style for those who show up for july's scribal tea so they can actually practice painting a scroll the proper way. If those scroll-blanks turn out nice they can decide whether they want to turn them in for the kingdom to use or to keep them as their first work.

And that's it for today !

Back to business

Batarde
Batarde- You are bold and forward, but some people
consider you a bit twisted.

What Calligraphy Hand Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla

Ah, yes. Why am I not surprised that I'm a batarde ? Well, that was despite totally different recommendations my first hand I tried when I started doing calligraphy and to up until today this is my preferred hand with insular minuscule as a close second.
By now batarde comes naturally and it's just like writing in my everyday mundane handwriting. Sometimes, batarde comes more naturally than that., especially if I've been doing a lot of calligraphy.

That was the fencepost  I have been doing a LOT of calligraphy lateley, mainly to get a headstart on some kingdom scrolls before starting to tackle the mega-task of preparing the PS black and blue Panhandle Skirmishes scrolls due in october. Thank goodness, Tamara is going to help paint them - that is the time-consuming part of it.

Speaking of illumination, I have about 2 dozen of award scrolls sitting here that need painting and right now I'm preparing for july's scribal tea which is going to cover the basics of illumination like tools and materials and basics on how to paint. In august then I'll be holding the first class on how to draw - something a lot of people seem to have problems with. However, if you look at most medieval miniatures you should realize fairly quickly that they couldn't draw either and even that didn't stop them from copying eachother so even with marginal drawing skills ie knowing how to hold a pen and how to use an eraser everybody can do medieval-looking drawings :D

Renissance, well, that's a different story. That's when drawing and painting becomes a tad more refined and complicated and perspective-bound.

That's it for tonight, folks, be good and have fun !
